General Catalyst Leads $1.1B Round into 2-Month-Old River AI
General Catalyst and AMP PBC co-led a $1.1 billion seed/Series A round into River AI on August 11, with Nvidia, AMD Ventures, Y Combinator, and Temasek also participating. The company came out of stealth in June 2026 — making it roughly two months old at close — and was founded by Igor Babuschkin, whose prior roles span DeepMind, OpenAI, and xAI. A war chest of this size, deployed this early, implies investors expect River's approach to post-training to become load-bearing infrastructure rather than a developer convenience.
AMP PBC, the other lead, is itself newly formed. Replace Prompting With Ownership
River's first product is a neocloud API billed per million tokens, with rates that vary by the open model selected. Developers can run both reinforcement learning (RL) and low-rank adaptation (LoRA) fine-tuning through the same endpoint. The positioning is an explicit challenge to prompt engineering: "Prompting steers a model you don't own and can't improve. River lets you train open models into ones that are truly yours — and serve them like any other endpoint," the product literature states.
That framing connects directly to a problem practitioners running production LLM workflows already feel acutely — prompt tuning is fragile and non-persistent across model updates. Architectural Vision
Babuschkin's stated intent is to rebuild the AI stack end to end — training pipeline, models, product layer, and hardware — so that agents can be trained by individuals rather than operated on their behalf by a lab. "To get there, we believe the stack has to be rebuilt end to end: training, models, the product layer, and new hardware that lets personal AI live close to you," he wrote in his launch blog. The hardware component is notable: River is signalling interest in on-device or near-device compute, in the same vein as Nvidia's existing partnerships with PC makers like Dell, Microsoft, and HP for AI-capable hardware.
The personal-agent model River is pursuing — trained by the user, running on behalf of the user — is already visible in locally running agent tooling.
